It would be easy to forget your are still in Florida as you drive up the hilly path to attend the Herding Trials at the Penn Y Caerau farm in Lady Lake. Central Florida has hills, thick grass and some stunning views.
About a dozen teams competed in the weekend trials that included cattle (Friday at the Acorn Acres farm in nearby Bushnell), sheep and those ever unpredictable ducks. Breeds ranged from the ever popular Border Collies to a Malinois and a short haired collie.
Herding Trials
Herding and hunting are perhaps the oldest of partnerships between man and dog. There is something magical to watch these teams in action across the fields with sheep and cattle. The trials provide simulations of common ranch tasks. Driving the stock to a pen, splitting a herd (known as a shed) and leading through a "chute".
Unlike many popular games like dock diving or Fast CAT, the practice and training in herding requires dedication, patience and perseverance.

It is important to remember the trials are held at working farms and ranches. Penn Y Caerau is in rural Lady Lake, Florida. There is ample parking and the ground is level but not paved. There is no permanent seating, so spectators should bring their own chairs.
There is a Porta Potty available, but not one easily accessible to wheelchairs.
