Photo-Feature: Track Coursing February 2022 - part two

Second week of our Track racing coverage - LGRA,WRA and all new AOK9

Special Photo-Feature: SOMOS at Williston Horseman's Park

Spectators Welcome! Sighthound and All Other Breed K9 (AOK9) racing straight and new oval track in Florida.

Southern Most Sighthounds (SOMOS) hosted the second weekend of sighthound and all-breed racing in Williston, FL, and the first on their new oval track. National Oval Track Racing Association (NOTRA), Large Gazehound Racing Association (LGRA) and Whippet Racing Association (WRA) for sighthounds and All Breed K9 (AOK9) racing for all other dogs wanting that need for speed.

Both straight and oval tracks are laid out to specifications of the guiding leagues with rules that both service the games fairness and the safety of the dogs. Up to six dogs are released from a "box" in heats and muzzles required as an additional safety measure. The organizers provided both guidance and equipment for first time dogs.

Southern Most Sighthounds (SOMOS) is one of the largest and oldest sighthound clubs in the USA and welcome all new dogs to come play. More information will be coming this month in a full feature on www.badazzdogz.net

All new AOK9 add non-sighthounds and mixed breeds.

This league has existed for some time in California and Texas and is open to mix-breed dogs. A similar format to the sighthound races, up to 6 dogs can races the 200 yard straight track and are released from the start box. In its first day in Florida we saw everything from Border Collies to Bulldog mixes and more "vertically challenged" dogs run the entire 200 yards with great joy.

Safe, casual fun for all.

This form of dog racing is family orientated and intended for your personal pets. Dogs both small and large are separated by stature and smaller dogs run a shorter course on the oval track.

These races are for fun and bragging rights. Safety is paramount and the condition of each dog is checked before the rans and each dog must qualify with a test run before entering the first time. Judges monitor each race to ensure this.

A new beginning.

The interest from around the dog community, SOMOS has a great start to what many are hoping will become a regular part of Florida's already vibrant dog sports and events. The addition of the AOK9 opens of the track lure coursing for all breeds and the enthusiasm has the potential to make it one of the stars of the future in our state.
