Many of the fastest hounds in North America met at this years 2023 WRA/NOTRA Nationals at Florida Horse Park, Florida for three days of competition and fun. Southern Most Sighthounds (SOMOS) and Southern Whippets and Gazehounds (SWAG) acted as host for the dozens of dozens of Whippets from across the U.S. and Canada. After a day of conformation judging and fun games, the weekend kicked off early Saturday with straight track racing. Up to 6 dogs launched from the start box at a time down the 200 yard track.
The Whippet Racing Association (WRA) standardized this purebred racing with standards to assure safety and consistency with several line and finish judges monitoring each race.
Sunday switched to the Oval track, with up to four dogs at a time and these races standards and safety fall under the National Oval Track Racing Association (NOTRA) rules. The excitement of the two days was contagious and the many dogs were singing in anticipation of their turn at the 300 yard oval track.
SOMOS
With the larger tracks and more experienced race experience of the SOMOS and SWAG team, the races are carefully monitored for safety from many angles. From the dogs fitness, to the equipment to several safety observers on each race.
Our experience with the local SOMOS club have been very positive in helping new comers, so the only thing to prevent you from brining your own lure obsessed pup, is you!
Muzzles are requires, but the community is a great one and eager to help newcomers. With small breeds, there may not be a loaner on hand, so check in with the club ahead of time.
