The popular event returns to Tampa
2026 Corgi Derby
Tampa Bay Downs
Saturday 18th April 2026
It was a beautiful evening at Tampa Bay Downs as the Corgi Derby returned for the first time in seven years. Four Members of the Tampa Bay Corgi Meetup Group led by Tamnah resuscitated the popular event under the Tampa Bay Corgi Races. Surprisingly, there were only eleven volunteers helping with all the registrations, swag bags, traffic control, launch gate and assorted tasks. With hundreds of people and nearly 100 Corgi’s competing, the event ran very well due to the hard work of those volunteers.
CorgiAid
This year’s event net proceeds will go to CorgiAid a nonprofit organization founded to provide financial assistance to Corgis and Corgi mixes. They help them get the medical care need so they can become adoptable and they lend carts to corgis with mobility issues.
CorgiAid exists to provide a framework for support of rescue efforts for Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh Corgis and corgi mixes, for the enhancement of animal welfare and the betterment of mankind. – CorgiAid

Corgi dogs seem to have an innate ability to make people smile. But this tough little dog is both a working breed and a popular pet. Events like this are brilliant examples of what can be accomplished with some imagination and willpower. It helps both dog and man.
The Corgis affable image is an immediate draw and a popular breed with many of our veterans too. The small dogs are fiercely loyal, tough and full of character. Perfect partners for any mission.
Welsh folklore says Corgis are "enchanted dogs" used by fairies (Tylwyth Teg) as steeds for battle, carriages for travel, and to herd fairy cattle. Legend holds that the dark, saddle-shaped markings on a Pembroke Welsh Corgi's coat are faint outlines of harnesses or saddles worn when ridden by fairy warriors..
AKC describes the Pembroke Corgi "Among the most agreeable of all small housedogs, the Corgi (both Pembroke and Cardigan) is a strong, athletic, and lively little herder who is affectionate and companionable without being needy. They are one the world’s most popular herding breeds."
Wrapping Up
This is a truly “just for fun” event. There is no national title on the line and the whole idea is to have fun and promote this fearless breed. Some of the pups weren’t too sure which way was forward, and the busy stands cheered and laughed as the spectacle unfolded. Each race was accompanied by the truly brilliant race commentary of Tampa Bay Downs own professional race announcer Jason Beem .
Big events usually mean big overheads. The Tampa Corgi Races defy that logic with good hearts in the right place. From local businesses to the Tampa Bay Downs track itself, all joining to give a little bit to help to make a little dog be great! It is fantastic to see the Corgi Derby return, and we hope this time as an annual event everyone can enjoy.
