Florida Wiener Dog Derby returns to the Tampa Riverfest

The Florida Weiner Dog Derby (FWDD) returned to the Tampa Riverfest at Curtis Hixon Park for its 15th anniversary. Over 200 dogs competed in the largest turn out in the events history. Organizer Karen Slifker and MC Johnathan Vasquez-Martinez kept things rolling along between races and fun games. Including the ever-popular costume and kisses competitions.
The event is fun for everyone and draws a large audience. The annual FWDD raises funds for local Dachshund rescues, Skyway Dachshund Rescue and Dachshund Adoption Rescue and Education (DARE). The winner of the races is eligible to race at the National Dachshund Race in Findlay, Ohio in September.
The Florida Weiner Dog Derby has continued to grow over the last fifteen years and ten as part of the Riverfest. The Riverfest is the annual free event at the downtown Tampa Riverwalk. Multiple vendors and a free concert featuring local bands. For many the highlight is the Dachshund races on Saturday.
The Riverfest races are not the only chance you get to see the running of the Wieners. In fact, there are over a dozen races throughout central Florida over the year and many chances to get your own Dachshund started. The FWDD even has a video on their Facebook page with tips on how you can train at home.
