The Rats are Back!

Ten Years of friendly ratting for the Barn Hunt Association

Trials at G2 Barn Hunt Morriston, Florida May 2023 [galleries below]

Over two years since we have featured this very popular game for your nosey dogs and G2 Barn Hunt in Morriston, Florida is the perfect venue to show why this sport has continued to be one of the most popular to come along in many years. Dozens of dogs from tiny terriers to a Great Dane played for three days of rat hunting in the very real barn and hay bales in the rural woods near Goeth State Forest in North Central Florida.

Barn Hunt Association

Created by Robin Nutall in 2013 after she found there was a need for an activity for her Miniature Pinscher “Zipper” whose breed wasn’t accepted in the existing Earth Dog games of the American Kennel Club (AKC) at the time she created the Barn Hunt Association.

Barn Hunt provides an opportunity for many breeds that came into existence to protect humans and livestock from the many dangers of wild rats both in urban and rural areas and a critical role before modern medicine to save lives.

Simulating the hunt for the sneaky vermin in a safe and fun environment requires no risk to the rats themselves and is a very entertaining activity for both humans and the dog. Perhaps even the rat?

We welcome everyone, from seasoned dog sport competitors to people who have never even been to a dog show before. Our titles are recognized by the American Kennel Club, United Kennel Club, and Canadian Kennel Club. - BHA

G2 Barn Hunt

Lorri Griffon is the owner and trainer at G2 Barn Hunt in Morriston, Florida. She took an interest in Barn Hunt very early after the sport was announced. Not as a new customer, but with a concern for the humane treatment of the rats themselves. Lorri has a Rat rescue, and the plight of the often-maligned little animals was a personal concern when she first heard of this new league. Lorri was so impressed; she now owns and operates one of the country’s most active Barn Hunt locations.

Her venue sits right off a dirt road near Morriston, Florida and spreads many heavily wooded acres. Providing training, a nine-acre private dog park, a rat rescue, and Barn Hunt events that have grown from one- or two-day events to almost weeklong trials due to the popularity the sport has gained.

Perhaps one of the most endearing and biggest draws of G2 Barn Hunt is the traditional rustic barn they games are held in. This is unusual and leaves quite an impression. Another is the atmosphere. The location is quite beautiful, and the overwhelming impression is a very welcoming and lighthearted experience. Some competitors even dress up in very tongue in cheek fanciful attire and “Rat hunting” Puns are to be seen everywhere. From decorations to T-Shirts to the signage that celebrate the real stars. The rats themselves.

Wrapping Up

This is a “low impact” sport that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The events at G2 Barn Hunt we have witnessed for years are always jovial and the cheers for every dog from new to veteran along with the “cheeky” irreverence of the teams always makes the visit a very fun and relaxing experience.

Take the first step and get in touch with your local clubs and check for events in your area. Come on out and see for yourselves. Your own dogs will thank you for it later!
